Fuzzing Protocol Testing

The client required a comprehensive fuzzing protocol testing engagement for a Carrier VoIP Provisioning Portal Server, a secure web-based system managing subscriber provisioning, device setup, and system resources for VoIP communication networks. The scope included:

  • Test Scope: Sent anomalous and malformed SIP messages to target endpoints to evaluate protocol robustness.
  • Tools Used: Codenomicon Defensics for SIP protocol fuzzing and anomaly injection.
• Test Procedure
  • Test Environment Setup: Configured a SIP testbed with a simulated User Agent Server (UAS). Created a baseline SIP message flow using INVITE–BYE sequences to emulate real call setup and teardown. Established a high-availability (HA) environment with active–standby switching to monitor failover behavior.
  • Fuzzing Execution: Utilized Codenomicon Defensics SIP test suites to generate and inject mutated SIP messages with header anomalies (e.g., malformed Record-Route, Contact, Via, CSeq). Applied boundary value and protocol deviation payloads, along with timing-based tests and unexpected message orders. Monitored server response, captured system logs and packets, and evaluated HA controller stability throughout the process.
  • Observation and Analysis: Collected and analyzed crash reports, memory dumps, and failover events. Assessed SIP response codes, resilience under stress, and adherence to RFC 3261 compliance standards.
